Leather is a material commonly used to make purses, handbags, duffle bags and briefcases leather.  Although it is a commonly used product among professionals, very few people actually know how to take care of their leather briefcase.

Caring for a Leather Briefcase

Even though many people dish out the cash for a briefcase, not all owners will know how to care for their investment. Even though leather is a relatively durable product, it still needs some tender love and care to ensure it lasts years to come. Here are a few tips to care for your leather briefcase to keep it in top-notch condition.

  • Briefcases that are used daily will need to be maintained regularly. Avoid getting any liquids or other substances on your briefcase. If you get anything on your briefcase, act quickly and blot it off with a soft, dry cloth or paper towel. Once the substance is removed, allow your briefcase to air dry.
  • If your briefcase gets soaked by the rain, empty the contents, open it, and set it upside down to air out. Blot the moisture from the leather surface using paper towels. Stuff the inside of your briefcase with newspapers to absorb the moisture from inside. Allow your briefcase to air dry completely before using it again.
  • Watch where you set your briefcase down. Before you fling your briefcase down on a table or desk, quickly glance to check for any food or debris. Once a week, wipe down the exterior of your briefcase to remove any dust and dirt that may have accumulated throughout the week. Once a month, use a damp cloth to wipe down the interior of your briefcase, leaving it open afterward to air dry.
  • In addition, you’ll need to occasionally clean and condition the leather. Be sure that you only use a quality leather cleaner that is recommended by the briefcase manufacturer. You may also use a damp cloth for cleaning the leather.
  • It is imperative that you condition the leather at least once a year. Apply the conditioner using a soft sponge or cloth. Be sure to cover the entire surface before wiping it again with a soft cloth. Only use a leather conditioner that is recommended or provided by the manufacturer.
